My Go-To Carry-On Items for a 10+ Hour Flight
by Ava Haag
Welcome back to Ava’s High Fives—your cozy corner of the internet for slow, soulful, and smart travel tips.
Okay, 10+ hours on a plane is no joke—so you’ve gotta come prepared. These are my top 5 must-haves that always make long-haul flights a little more manageable (and honestly, most of them come with me no matter how long the flight is).
iPhone & Earbuds
I always download movies and shows from Netflix or Prime Video beforehand—just in case I don’t vibe with the in-flight entertainment. It’s the easiest way to pass time up in the air. Just don’t forget your charger, because your battery will not survive without it.
Large Scarf & Compression Socks
I always bring some sort of lightweight blanket scarf—preferably wool—that folds up small but can fully cover me if I get cold. Airlines usually give you a blanket and pillow, but they’re often thin and tiny. This does the job way better.
Compression socks might not be the cutest thing ever, but they’re essential. Long flights mess with your circulation, which can make your legs and feet ache. These help with blood flow and keep everything feeling normal. I also try to get up for a short walk now and then, and drink tons of water. Speaking of…
Water Bottle & Healthy Snacks
Bring a refillable water bottle and add electrolytes—super helpful for hydration on long flights. The dry air can really get to you, and staying hydrated makes everything feel better.
I also bring good snacks. On short flights I’ll pack fun stuff like M&M’s or chips, but for long ones I go for nutrition: trail mix, apple or orange slices, crackers and cheese (eat those early), almond butter packets, and lots of granola bars.
Book & Pen
I always pack a book. Sometimes I get tired of watching movies and just want something slower to keep my brain busy. Real books are my go-to, but Kindles are definitely more practical if you’re traveling for a while.
And don’t forget a pen—it’s one of those things you never think to bring, but always need. I use it to fill out immigration forms or just play games like tic tac toe with friends.
Skincare + Eye Mask & Earplugs
This might sound a little over the top, but I bring a few skincare basics to keep my face from feeling gross and dry. I usually pack a small moisturizer, rose mist, and a good lip balm—and do a quick refresh before bed.
Once I’m ready to sleep, I use an eye mask and earplugs. Game changer.
Whether you’re flying across the world or just heading somewhere new, these are the things that help me stay comfy, sane, and (somewhat) fresh. Safe travels!
